Everglades Diary

Sunrise over Sunday Bay

Welcome
In the winter of 2000 I embarked upon the first of a series of canoe trips along and around the Wilderness Waterway of Florida's Everglades National Park. These pages contain my personal chronicles of these trips, as well as a guide to planning and preparing for a Wilderness Waterway expedition. To date, I've paddled the majority of the Waterway and the adjacent rivers and coastal waters between Everglades City and Flamingo. My ultimate goal is to provide a complete and fully illustrated guide to the Everglades Wilderness Waterway and the surrounding river and Gulf Coast trails.
At the heart of this site are the journals that I've kept of my Everglades expeditions. By offering detailed accounts of a Wilderness Waterway trek from start to finish, I hope to provide a level of detail that is often lacking in guides that just give a cursory description of the campsites and waterways. Each journal is accompanied by a series of captioned slideshows that photographically chronicle each trip from start to finish. I also plan on developing a series of charts that will mark the route of each journey, and will be composed of image maps that link to photos of the selected location.
In addition to the journals and photos, this site also includes an overview of how I planned and what I packed for my trips into the backcountry. An Everglades wilderness expedition is not for the inexperienced paddler, and it's my hope that I can offer some advice and guidance for those feel comfortable in undertaking such a trip on their own. If you've just started paddling a canoe or kayak and still want to explore the backcountry, I strongly recommend the services of a guide or outfitter for your first extended trip. For my part, I've been paddling a canoe for more than fifteen years, much of it along the mangrove shorelines of Tampa Bay and the central Florida Gulf coast in an environment very similar to that of the Ten Thousand Islands.
What I'd really like is to hear from you, especially if you've already made your own forays into the Everglades wilderness. This site is far from complete and is being continuously developed and updated, and as it changes and (hopefully) improves, your feedback will be essential in making it a site worth returning to. Tell me what you like or don't like about what you see here - I welcome all comments and constructive criticisms. With your help and encouragement I hope to make the Everglades Diary a valuable resource for those who would like to explore and enjoy Florida's Wilderness Waterway.
